China cannot/would not offer anything new. So it is really if US wants to pretend and extend and call a truce. Given easing pressure from the fed and the Market, it seems less pressing for the US to call a truce. It is all short term nonsense anyway. The cold war between China and America is well under way.

Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly can Trump and Xi offer each other that could be called a "deal"? Trump wants China to change its ways with regard to IPR, technology transfer and so on. Apart from nice words, how can Xi offer anything that could possibly be construed as meeting or coming anywhere near the US demands?

Trump can offer to not deploy more tariffs, but in exchange for what?

To me, any talk of a "deal" only helps the Chinese, and does nothing for the US's stated demands. But then again, it still looks like different US heads want different things. The very fact that "deals" can be discussed is a sign that the US doesn't really know what it wants from this fight.
