President Trump, in a fairly transparent attempt to goose the US stock markets that may be seen in Beijing as a sign that he is very nervous about the market reaction to more tariffs, tweeted Wednesday AM: As I wrote yesterday, Liu He’s Thursday arrival does not give the negotiators much time, so barring credible enough promises of the concessions the US wants that President Trump and General Secretary Xi get on a call and agree to delay this round of tariffs again, the US tariffs will increase Friday. And if they do the Chinese side is making clear they will retaliate, though perhaps not with an identical step up in rates, in the hopes that the talks will be able to continue.
