Well I should note that Taiwan's election looks like it's going to be a pretty bad loss for the ruling party in a month, it would be weird if the US play up Tsai only to have her losing reelection in 2020 (if the current polls hold, the DPP would lose out on nearly half their local governor seats and be in a worse position than Ma was after 2014. )
Of course, US cross-strait policy is generally independent of what's actually happening in Taiwan, but ignoring Taiwan's own initiative and political trends is probably going to burn a lot of people eventually.
